Red Ribbon Week Anti Drug Campaign

Held every year from October 23-31, Red Ribbon Week is observed by of thousands of schools and youth organizations around the country to celebrate a drug free life. It also teaches children about the dangers of drugs. Coordinated by school administrators, teachers, parents, police departments and other community groups, the event features fun activities to teach kids about living a healthy life making the right life choices.

Red Ribbon Week was originally started in 1985 to honor the late drug enforcement agent, Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. Agent Camarena was tortured and murdered by members of a drug cartel while on duty. Red ribbons were worn by those who knew him and later, this practice became the theme for the fight against drug abuse. Congress proclaimed Red Ribbon Week an official event in 1988.

Today, schools celebrate Red Ribbon Week with all students wearing red ribbons and fun handouts like coloring books and lollipops are distributed.

We will be giving our next generation plenty of headaches to deal with from a weak economy to global warming. Let's not let drugs be one of them.
